It was a perfect day. In the past we've always had lots of family and friends over to celebrate a first birthday. It's such a fun birthday to celebrate. Because we have provided so many siblings for Grant we had a big enough party just with us. The kids set up the agenda for the games. They new Grant's favorite things. A screaming contest. Knocking down blocks. Throwing him in the air. Peek-a-boo. What a perfect party agenda. The cake. It deserves it's own blog post but I'll just include it with this one. Ever since Stephanie moved into town my kids were SPOILED with their cakes. They are dreamy. Check out her most recent cake if you want to see what I'm talking about. Stephanie moved away and I was able to sneak by with donut cakes and Costco cakes since then. However, a baby's first cake has to be perfect. So Steph and I had many phone conversations about what I should do. I really wanted to attempt to make it. My vision required 2 cake boxes and a few layers. I figured it couldn't be that hard. It didn't take long before I knew it was going to be a complete failure. When I was trying to decide if I should laugh or cry, I asked Holly what she thought of the cake. She had been coloring and without even looking she said, "It's pretty". Then she looked up. "No, it's pretty and ugly." Pause. "No. It's ugly, ugly, ugly." In that moment I knew I had failed. I knew it was time to jump ship and head to the store. So, I loaded the kids up and bought a cake from Thriftway so Grant could have the perfect cake all the time realizing how silly the whole thing was. Because do you think this little guy cares what kind of cake he was getting?
He performed beautifully but a part of me ached as I watched him lather his body in the greasy, foreign, yucky, store bought cake. So after just a few minutes I chucked the expensive cake in the garbage and gave him the ugly, ugly, ugly cake I had labored over with love. And everyone was happy. Lesson learned.
And since you made it to the end of the post I need some suggestions. Now that I have had such a sweet, brown-eyed boy for over a year, I really need a new name for my blog. I just can't come up with anything fun. Ideas?
